Saya's heart is breaking at the thought she will never see again her beloved Tohru nor her children, but she won't back down from the fate she chose herself. All her life, from the very moment she first met Tohru, was meant to get her here.
It's because she loved Tohru that she married the head priest. It's because she needed to stay here that she bore him these children. It doesn't mean that she doesn't love them. She does! But she loves Tohru even more.
She never lied to any of them. She just never told them the full truth either.
She remembers her first goodbye, right after they got their highschool diploma.
What about you? What will you do once you finish highscool?
Some plan to go to university, to keep studying, or to start working immediately. As for Saya...
"I'm getting married."
"You're going to be a housewife?"
"I guess so."
"And who are you marrying?"
"A priest. "
"Wow. What a surprise."
Tohru felt betrayed at the time. She didn't know!
"So you were seeing a boy?"
"No, I wasn't. I'm not."
"Did your parents arrange it?"
"Neither."
Tohru would hate them if that was the case. But no.
"I did it."
Saya tried to explain things as if they were simple, as if what she was doing with her life didn't matter. The man's identity, as far as she was concerned, didn't matter at all, but she saw that it bothered Tohru greatly. How could she make her understand?
She only needed to live in a certain temple. Because of a sword. Because she didn't want Tohru to die.
It's Tohru she wished she'd marry, but it was not possible. Because Tohru's life was already tied to Earth's fate. All Saya could do, was marrying her fate.
And it made her happy to do so! Of course she would have preferred to be her wife, to live with her, to bear her kids maybe... but Saya knew that even if she didn't do it, Tohru would leave very soon anyway. Tohru too would need a find a husband, or at least a man, in order to give birth to Kamui. So, Saya chose to leave before that. The sooner, the better.
They reunited some years later.
"It's been so long."
"Yes, right after highschool."
"I'm so glad to see you again!"
"How are you doing?"
"I'm a respectable housewife and mother of two, now. And almost an old lady."
"Respectable, of course. Old, surely not! You're still young."
"My son has already started school. And children grow up so fast. It seemes like only yesterday..."
"You got married so young."
"I married your fate."
They rekindled their old friendship, lived as neighbours, had their children play together.
They even took some vacation time without Saya's husband. For a few hours, for a couple of days, they pretended to be one happy family.
In her time of dying, Saya remembers that one happy summer not so far ago.
Kotori buried her in sand and sculpted a mermaid's tail. Fuuma and Kamui went looking for seahorses and dragons in the puddles between the rocks. The rising tide drowned a sand castle...
They gathered all of their children together and finally went home. Kyougo wasn't here, busy with temple business. Here's just one small guilty afterthough about him, but don't these two mommies and their three children make one happy family?
They did, but not for long. After she's gone, the children will still have a loving father. Kamui will still have a mother... for a time. As for her...
...the happy memory shatters, that little make believe fades way, her body as much as her mind tears down.
