Tim believed in demons. Why wouldn't he? Since he was a child, he's had dreams in which he had wings and horns and lived with other monsters. He loved the dreams because in these, he could fly. And the monsters looked scary but were actually friendly. While in the waking world... his mother looked friendly, but... well. When he thought these were only dreams he talked about them. Dad smiled and agreed they seemed fun. Mom... looked like she wanted him to just shut up. So he did. Before she made him.
He learned not to talk about the dreams anymore. He never tried at school. The jocks would call him a freak on top on a wimp and mock him even more and... and, he didn't want to see if they would do more.
Sometimes, often, humans acted like monsters. So real monsters couldn't be that scary, compared to them. The idea that big, not-that-scary, maybe-rather-friendly monsters existed somewhere comforted him. A world with only humans would be too bleak.
Nonetheless, he didn't stoop into a goth phase: that would be an invitation for everyone at school to mock him up and beat him down for sure. He never, ever, made a show of it. It was his secret. That still, he believed. And hoped that someday, he would meet one.
Zombillenium, the amusement park the other side of the nowhere zone? Surely that was only make-believe. A mockery. But Dad thought it would make a good birthday present, and Mom just shrugged for once instead of shooting it down like every other idea, so...
