And this girl comes from as far as Australia! half the world across! Now that’s dedication!
That what they reduced Taylor to: the fan who came all the way from so, so far away. In a way it’s flattering and she’s glad they won’t nickname her kangaroo and imply that she comes from a savage country, that would be… yeah she won’t even go there. But there’s more than to her than where she comes from and how far she travelled! Like, how dedicated she is? How grateful she is for this series? But that’s not the point. They’re here as fans, all of them, they’re brought together by a common passion. That’s what needs celebrating.
And it was better that the Queen Fatstone comments that followed later then thankfully died down too. To reduce her to her weight, to her body size, now that was hurtful, really hurtful. Awful. But she’s glad she’s past it and she doesn’t want to revisit that kind of awfulness.
And it’s good too that they don’t think she’s too obsessive, that she’s crazy, oh the neurodivergent, retarded cringey fangirl. She knows what some people would call her over the internet. She doesn’t want it advertised here. God forbid that they see what her problem is—she still have trouble admitting that her difference is a disability.
She doesn’t want to--but it is. And she has to learn to live with it. Queen Firestone is something that helped. The online community. Charlie and Jamie, her two only real friends. Encountering Britta and Valentina, her two new real friends!
There are so many facets to her, to who she is, but the one she wants to shine light on right here right now, is her absolute love for Queen Firestone.
Yes! There’s love for these books all across the world! From next town and from the antipodes! It attracts different kind of people.
She went and spoke with some of them, isn’t that great? There’s even one girl--at least Taylor thinks she’s a girl—who shouts,
I love your accent! I can’t place it but love it!!
…well it’s not an accent where she comes from, but the way everyone speaks. And that’s the point once again. They come from all over the world.
She stops to think that they’re lucky they share a common language. She’s thankful that all she has, coming from so far away, is an accent. Because she knows that there’s an international following for Queen Firestone, so some other fans come from closer but have to pass the language barrier. And that’s incredible too.
For all she knows Supacon could even be located in a whole different universe. Between the jetlag, the shift in the weather, oh that’s crazy how seasons behave. It’s like she stepped out of the plane to a different planet. And somehow, yes, the convention is set outside of the ordinary world. There are fans in cosplay, in anime shirts, with crazy hair colours, and with weirder stuff even. And there, then, she can be herself, among fellow fans. They all share this passion.
Queen Firestone might be a fictional character, and she does not consider her her best friend, or herself, like some other fans might, but her feelings thanks to her are real. And she might idealize the author as a nebulous concept but she still knows she’s a real person behind. And yes she came all the way from Australia, not just to have fun--a convention is stressful--not just to commune with fans--she already did on the internet--but for the chance to meet Skyler Atkins.
Skyler Atkins acts flattered by everything Taylor tells her. She’s a real person, yes. As the author she’s not a goddess, and she’s not a friend either; she counts as a parasocial relation--but she’s still a human being she can have a cordial conversation with. And that’s all Taylor wished for.
