Everything changes. Since the Singularity that caused animals to mutate, humans had to adapt. Mutes claimed the surface. Then a reverse singularity almost happened, happened partially, and was stopped before spreading. In terms of human memory, 200 years are short: 8 to 10 generations at best; one may remember their grandparents and great-grandparents and imagine what their lives were like, but what about their grandparents and great-grandparents?
(And she has no parents, no grandparents, no memory of any family whatsoever anyway.)
In terms of human history now, it was nothing. They’d been here for so much longer, and fucking up the planet for almost as long. It terms of mute history… everything. They were still inventing themselves.
So a few generations later that world keeps changing. For the mutes, for the humans, and for their dreams. Kipo changed it for the best. And… she’s glad Kipo did, and she was here to see it. She’s glad she’s changed, too. That she’s learned that soft is not weak, and there might be a path where the weak are allowed to survive anyway. Not that she’s weak; she’s strong! But that the whole world is not doomed to gloom.
She grows up. She sheds the skin. It’s difficult, to embrace a human heritage she never knew. But a lot of people are learning a lot about themselves; she’s not alone. And she has Kipo.
She won’t seek Margot out. That’s the past and she’d rather let go of it. She wants to stop hurting because of it! She’s glad to have Kipo instead.
Kipo’s a truer sister than Margot and the other wolf cubs have ever been. Well they set the bar way too low in the first place but… well she could have kept on rejecting the whole concept of family. She’s glad she’s let Kipo change her.
They didn’t become the buff Mega Bunnies hunters she once dreamt of. Kipo went punk, that’s even better! And herself? A Mega Corgi herder. That’s… good too. To nurture instead of destroying?
They work together. They bring and keep different Mutes and different humans and devolved animals together. And they’re so much work to do. This part of the world is doing good, but what about further away?
It’s not a fairytale happy ending—yes, she learns about fairy tales too, now there’s time enough for that—it’s a world they have to keep on building, by trial and error, and with set-backs they’ll have to face. They hope won’t make too big errors, but now they know how to face their consequences. She knows when and how to apologize; how to learn from the mistakes and how to try and fix them. There’s always something else they can try.
They call each other sister. They’re family. From what she learnt, a family starts when two unrelated people coming together to form a new unit, and that’s just what they are.
But something went wrong. Because Kipo still calls Wolf her sister—she shed the skin and the anger and she won’t shed the name because Kipo bestowed it on her: she keeps it, and the nicknames too.
Yet Wolf wants Kipo all for herself, in a way sisters are not supposed to. What she’s thinking of, now that’s she’s on the verge of becoming an adult, is… to get married? Not that she plans to have children anytime soon—there are the Mega Corgi pups to take care of anyway—but…
She’s still wondering. This part of the world is all but done and shouldn’t face set-backs anymore now. But the world is big and there are other Mute tribes, other burrows out there that need Kipo’s message and they’re setting out on a journey. What was impossible in the little corner of the world they call home… could change too once they’re away?
And even if not, there’s always an adventure waiting for them!
