What if she can’t be the Avatar anymore? Korra’s built her whole identity over it since she was a very young child. Bending all four elements, being an anchor for all the nations, being a bridge between humans and spirits… even if she didn’t master all of that yet, she would. She would soon. She had too. Then she failed.
Without that she’s nothing. No, she’s not free, no, she doesn’t see herself able to be everything she sets her mind to. She can’t be a pro bender anymore either; her face is too well-known. She couldn’t trust herself to be a bending master: and teach children, when she had no patience herself has a pupil? A spiritual leader, she was a complete failure. A politician… let’s just not go there. She knows nothing of the world, of real people! That was a painful enough lesson.
So.
She sets out to learn. Or maybe to lose herself all the more. She’ll go on a discovery quest. But in this journey she’ll have to has to sustain herself, to feed herself. She can’t just beg, that wouldn’t do. One way or another she’ll have to earn something for a living. But make a living in this world that makes no sense anymore!
If she can’t be a professional bender anymore, they maybe she’ll be… an underground bender. There are different kinds of organised fights. She’ll wager on her victory but get pummelled again. She still gets paid for a good show, but not much, it’s never a good show and it hurts, body and spirit. She can’t even be sure why she keeps losing, is she such a poor bender, so far from Avatar levels, or is some part of her trying to keep on punishing herself for failing her life mission?
That’s not a proper way of living, she knows that much, she needs to build something instead of keeping on destroying herself… but what, that’s the problem: she has no idea.
She knows that Mako and Bolin lived on their own at a very young age but she’s not going to join a straight-up gang. There’s a limit of how low she’ll get. What better example can she follow? What if, say, Asami lost her company? Crooks keep trying to outdo her, bankrupt her, steal it from her, and she fights back because it’s hers . It was her father’s but she cleared her own name and made her peace with him, it’s hers now.
But if her efforts still failed? Korra knows for sure that she would just start anew and whip up another one. Unlike her Asami’s full of resources and creates her won opportunities. Even if she was not CEO anymore she’s still engineer and she could do just about anything, everything she sets her mind to. Needs new skills? She’ll learn them. She’s not a bender? That’s not a problem. Korra trusts that she could invent more and more machines to use any element and bend them to her will through science even without chi. Asami could be anything and everything, including a pro bender, including a temp Avatar.
…So why can’t Korra?
