Tara's 16th birthday happens while they're all in Paris. Darcy knows her sweet girlfriend well and knows that, had they been at home, she would have liked something intimate and classy. But they're in the middle of a school trip so forget intimate, and for all the romantic reputation of Paris what they've seen so far isn't exactly classy. Their hotel room is big and comfortable enough but that's it. So she'll make the best of it: she invited tons of friends and even sneaked alcohol in to make the party more lively! And they will have a good time, no matter what! Let's make this party memorable!
Tara frowns a bit when she sees the bottle but can't say no to the party. They're having one last blast before going home, after all. Only thing she's adamant on: no «spin the bottle» game! The only bottle spinning is that vodka that Darcy's bent on enjoying. Tara says tastes awful and Darcy's too proud to admit it; it's an adult thing, an adquired taste, and she wants to look mature... and she does enjoy the buzz that settles in after the first burn.
It's a bit different but it sort of reminds her of the giddiness from kissing Tara, and she can't kiss her right here right now in front of everyone and make the truth known. She wouldn't dare. It's not just her secret to reveal, she needs consent from Tara too, she needs intent.
She doesn't want to hide, but their relationship is theirs first, it belongs to them, not to the gossip mill and, well, she doesn't trust everyone here to react well. They don't want the heartache of rejection or harrassment that could come with being publicly out.
Darcy knows that she wouldn't outright lie and deny loving Tara dearly if asked directly, but she won't flaunt it off either.
Even if it was for their own protection, no, she won't lie in front of Tara and pretend she doesn't love her more than herself! And who would lie in a game of Truth or Dare? You just don't do that. It's... not proper. Plus, caught unaware by an unexpected question, who can make up a convincing lie? Darcy couldn't. Not on a normal day, she's too spontaneous for that. Certainly not tonight all buzzed off and fuzzy.
One can carefully chose to reveal only part of the truth. Not lie, just omit bits. Charlie doesn just that. Good for him.
Funny, still, that it's Tara's party and yet everyone focuses on Charlie instead? They're blind to her, to them. It feels unfair. But to whom? To the shy birthday girl who gets a spotlight unwanted in the first place stolen from her, or to the boy who keeps being needled by strangers about his sexuality? Like, what should it matter to everyone else?
Charlie's story is one of horror to her. Coming out should be a personal choice and nobody owes it to anyone else.
Tara's parents are open, but Darcy's are so close minded, she can't come out to them. So she vents off steam by hunting bullies.
And for now. No kissing tonight. Just a bit of hand holding. And drinking instead!
