Four hundred years prior, Dante had to follow without even believing a religion honouring a Holy Virgin and a son born with no human intervention. The child she uses here has no part to play, he’s but a tool to prop the Mother—and was born from humiliation, violence, blood, sin, sin against his mother—and yet the Mother forgives and loves him, as she loves the whole city and all its inhabitants.
Dante made up this new religion from bits and bobs of old ones patched together to fit her own purposes. Here’s the Goddess, and she’s the Prophet.
