Children coming for temporary lodging at the Esperanza's usually are here to be sheltered from a broken home, or even the street and all of the dangers that come with it, and they're supposed to find here peace and stability.
The family fosters them until they're able to live on their own or they're relocated elsewhere. Trisha adamantly refuses the idea of any adoption. She doesn't want a new sibling, let alone a stranger. She and her cat and her parents are a perfect peaceful unit... most of the time.
And them time and again people barge in and upheave her life. She won't be openly hostile to these kids, no: she'd only get punished for that and she won't stand another of her parents' lecture on generosity and open-mindness and what not.
Instead she wages a secret, discreet war. Nobody could prove her bullying. It's all accidents. And with enough nasty little tricks they all break down and run away in a couple of weeks tops, thus proving they were unstable and unable to fit in their perfect, normal family. Good riddance!!
