Little Delphine Cass was not allowed anywhere without one or both of her parents. A nanny, a babysitter? that wouldn't do, they trusted no one. Of course she wasn't allowed home alone, even for a few minutes. They took her to and back from school themselves--hoping that there, at least, surrounded by so many other children and watched over by teachers, she would be safe.
They're always worried something will happen to their beloved daughter--they couldn't stand to lose her the way they lost her older sister, kidnapped as a baby by a madman armed with a knife, under her powerless mother's very eyes. years after the case was never solved, leaving them forever stuck with unanswered questions and this vision of the empty crib floating in their mind whenever they looked at their second daughter. On the one hand they treasured the mere fact they'd be able to watch this one grow up; on the other hand they'll never take their luck fro granted ever again.
