Vi and Vander and also the boys taught Powder a lot—how to survive, climb, fight back, fend for herself, dream also. On the subject of bombs she’s mostly self-taught. She’s got great ideas stemming from a vivid imagination and inventiveness but she lacks proper basis to work from.
Vander got her books from Benzo but they don’t teach everything—or she doesn’t understand them well enough.
But. One other skill she’s got from her family is perseverance. She’ll keep taking stuff apart, pry at the bits, see how to fit them back together. Try again. Until she gets it.

Ahh, a Powder fic! ♡ She's my number one fave and I love this! The tragedy of her just always trying her best and never really doing anything actually WRONG but still never quite doing things right either, and what this led to because there was absolutely NO room for mistakes... Any story that takes place 'before' is automatically heartbreaking because it didn't have to be this way, but also there was no way to prevent it without knowing the future.

Yes! I don't think I'd be able to write Jinx but younger Powder who just wanted to help? My heart just breaks for her.
(Maybe someone should have stopped and thought "hey maybe don't let the child play with explosives"? but yeah again, as long as her bombs just didn't explode at all, nobody could have predicted how unexpected magic would make them actually dangerous.)

Yeah, that's kind of where the tragedy lies - "maybe the child is too young to do this potentially dangerous thing" is not an argument you can make when you have a whole bunch of other, not much older, children doing dangerous things all the time. There's kind of an opposite pressure for her even - both Powder and the others think that she should be able to do all this not-safe-for-children stuff by now because she's old enough. So Powder's enthusiasm to help, combined with this pressure, combined with magic... not a good combo, but it didn't even HAVE TO lead anywhere particularly bad, until it did.
