She’s dressed in her ceremonial best. They’ve stopped pretending they’ll win this war and that the ostentation is for glory purposes. She knows all too well they’re losing and she can hope to save only face—nothing else, no one else. Assimilation is coming.
Her enemies make a big show of her defeat—well, of their victory rather. They parade her as a trophy, a hard-won prize. They don’t care about her as a person, barely as a symbol; they only care for her state’s riches.
They make her a guest of honour in their triumph party… and then what?

Thank you! She may be the most minor character but she's so so striking, I really wanted to do something about her.
(Now on to my way to hunt for AU fics in which Mel manages to save her? ...maybe it'll hurt even more, knowing that it cannot be...)
