Most ponies are colourful—and except for the obvious cutie mark most ponies’ coats are one solid colour. Manes got wild, yes, but patterns on coats are not unheard from but seldom seen.
So this… zebra, she’s called, with stripes in black and white all over not just her mane but her whole body, strikes Ponyville’s citizens as weird. Foreign. Unnatural, maybe. Different, at least.
It doesn’t help that her manners are strange.
It takes another newcomer’s efforts for everypony to finally get over appearances, give her a real chance and get to know all the nuances of her character.
