Their investigation on the conspiration in the Army having unearthed horrors to big for them to handle, Winry and Scieszka decided to do the reasonable thing: flee and hide. It might be desertion and Scieszka will examine that later.
Now they’re on the train to Riesenburg, stuck on a long-ass ride with nothing to do. Worrying about getting caught won’t help: there’s nowhere else to flee at this point, and hopefully they’ve got enough of a headstart that they won’t face that too soon.
…Nothing but harp on what happened in the maintenance tunnel, even when it won’t solve anything; they can’t take their minds off of it.

‘You’ll need to explain your reasoning. Aliens?’
‘Well, yes.
Un-aging lady. Vampires don’t exist, it’s science. Immortality either, or with all the state sponsored alchemical research we would know.
However. People not from this world can follow different sets of rules. Hence, aliens.
Turning her body into water?
Alchemy cannot do that. That’s… that’s human transmutation. On oneself! That’s doubly impossible.
But. If she’s a sapient gelatinous blob from a different planet. A water planet.
I don’t know how she travelled through space either. I’m not a rocket scientist, let alone from another world. Say they can. In space cups and saucer, if they’re liquid.
Then it makes sense!’
‘And an unaging, living gelatinous blob from outer space, would mess up with Amestris’ frontier politics and racial tensions?
You got the how, but why??
‘I don’t know, I’m not a gelatinous blob from outer space! For fun? For anthropological studies? I guess for them it would be alien science… to… to harvest nutrients from the mass massacres? Maybe their physiology works that way, ew.’
‘That’s just too weird.
How about stolen identities? A conspiracy, totally human conspiracy? To… to steal land. For minerals or something.
Why aliens? We don’t need that.’
‘But maybe they need our ressources.
…Ok I really like aliens. The idea of different lifeformes out there. So that we’re not alone in the universe. So that I’m not alone. I’m not a gelantinous blob but sometimes I feel like an alien amongst humans so the thought that they’re out there is comforting.’
‘And ready to steal our ressources? Yeah that sure is very comforting.’
‘Or maybe not! Not to steal ressources, or dissect cattle, or anything. Maybe to bring us space travel.
To the stars and to water planets.
Not that I would even want to go, all my books are down there. But maybe they have nice stories too, different from our own. And the idea of space travel is nice.’
‘The science of space travel… yeah it’s beyond what I know of mechanics, not my field of expertise.
Wonder whether we could have a space research programme on top of the alchemical research programme. Could be nice.
But. I don’t think aliens are real.’
‘And I didn’t, not really, until then. But the scientific method calls for reevaluation of our beliefs and our axioms in the face of new, contradictory evidence.’
‘I’ll hand you that, I don’t know enough of alchemy after all and I’m all set on having my initial beliefs reevaluated. When I’m in the right headspace to learn, and we’re not hunted down by either gelatinous blob monsters or gun-toting soldiers. And not today. Can I have a book you finished reading?’
‘Yeah. Here. This one has… rock monsters. Not gelatinous. Very bad literature, but that all you can find abandonned in a train coach and it, uh, sure takes your mind off things. With how bad it is.’
‘Deal.’
‘How long until we reach your place?’
‘Long enough for you to finish another one.’
‘Oh well.’
