The meaning of life can be summed up as: be kind.
Deirdre Beaubeirdra is not a dragon, here to steal her money, her laundry, her family’s life. She’s just doing her job, and her job is clarifying things.
She’s learnt the hard way with her daughter: be kind.
In other worlds where she made different choices she’s not married to Waymond. Instead of running this laundry, or letting this laundry run them dry, she’s rich, successful, happy. And no, there’s no sense that anything is missing. Frightening, isn’t it? In this life, her daughter, her Joy, is everything. If she disappeared her world would crumple. But, if she’d never existed at all, she wouldn’t even know. She wouldn’t miss her.
And Jobu Tupaky wouldn’t be hunting her down and killing random people and destroying realities.
She’s not going to sacrifice her daughter to save the world, even several worlds! In this life she exists. She’ll always save her first.
She can understand lives where she doesn’t, but she cannot conceived a world where Joy does exist and she wouldn’t love her daughter.
So. Her happiness doesn’t depend on being married to Waymond, her success seems to depend
on not being married to him. Her happiness doesn’t depend on having Joy either. There are worlds where she’s not married to anyone, worlds where she’s together with Deirdre.
Love, success, and happiness, all take many forms.
Waymond in this one life was a whirlwind romance, defiance and passion that toned down once they had to raise Joy. It took the spark out, but the love grew.
Loving Deirdre in this other universe was like fitting broken pieces together, and reasonable choices
that made the love grow too, through music and beauty.
In this world Deirde is still an IRS agent, not a friend. But! She understands her. She’s grateful for her understanding. They’re not supposed to become friends but they can still be on friendly terms.
So yeah, she invites her to their party. She’ll get to know her a bit out of her office, out of their troubles.
So what if they’re not supposed to? a little kindness goes a long way. Help others whenever, however you can.
Not to say that Joy’s girlfriend is a mistake because she can’t give her a child. It’s too soon for that. They’re not even talking about marriage. Joy’s very mmuch not ready for either. She might even never want children, as odd as it seems.
Not wanting children? That’s unconceivable to her. You get married, you get one child, if you can. You don’t have children, if you just can’t.
And yet she knows it does happen. She knows it could have happened to her. She knows it did happen, in other lives. Not having children. Not even wanting children. It’s a possible choice, not just an suffering the impossibility of having children. It can be a choice.
Choices again. Not hers. She cannot judge.
Not to say either that being married to Waymond is better than being married to Deirdre, or not being married to anyone, because it gave her Joy. But…
Be kind to others. Accept their choices.
Be kind to yourself. Find meaning and fulfilment in what you have. If that means glueing googly eyes on random objects…
Tell your loved ones, that you love them.
Oh right. She’s told Joy already but she’ll have to tell her again and again. You can never be certain.
Same for Waymond.
She’ll have to tell Deirdre she’s glad she took the time to hear and help them.
She’ll have to tell the girlfriend she’s grateful she loves her daughter and sticks with her in spite of the in-laws.
She’ll have to tell her dad, even though she’s still bitter he disowned her, she’s grateful that at least he accepts Joy and her girlfriend as they are, more than she herself did. And maybe she won’t be as bitter anymore.
That’s what their life is.
