The doctor sneezes, as discreetly as he can. The doctor’s been sneezing for a few days already, come to think. It’s light but it’s real, coming in twos or threes, several times a day, and the nursing staff has started giving him side glances.
‘It’s not a virus, I've checked, he assures them when he catches them staring. Not contagious.
It… looks more like an allergy. Quark did something last week with a scented product. Miles is on it but the air ducts are still not entirely cleared.’

That not what the nurses are worried about. They’re not worried, actually.
The UT translates the Bajoran respons as bless you and it’s not very far, but fails to catch a slightly different underlying meaning to this particular saying.

And when they think he’s out of earshot, there’s more to say.
‘I mean yeah, he's human. Chances he's pregant are low, and even if he were, symptoms wouldn't include sneezing, right?’
‘I heard it’s more nausea. Poor things.’
…but cultural ingrain runs deep, hence the hopeful blessing.

‘Can he carry young?’
‘Would he even want to?’
‘…Would be a good father?’
‘I’m not that sure.’
‘I’m sure he would.’

‘Say, who'd be most likely to sire young on him?’
‘Well. There's always Garak of course.’
‘And there's this purple alien lady he met last month, I’m pretty sure she's got an ovipositor.’
That orange furry alien person’s sex is unsure.’
‘We know Major Kira can't naturally knock someone else up; however I can bet if she wanted to het him pregnant she totally could, one way or another.’
‘Yeah but I don’t think she’d want to in the first place.’
‘Or only as retaliation.’
‘I'm quite certain that biology be damned he would do everything necessary and succeed if he wanted to carry children, whomever the other parent or parents, or even without another parent at all.’
‘…and there's always Garak.’

‘Come to think that won’t involve him carrying but I bet there are adoption papers already all drafted and ready down on Bajor. You want Cardassian war orphans? One, two, three, a dozen, all of them? just say put your thumbprint here, they're all yours whether you want to take them back to your space station, all the way to Cardassia, or to a nice cottage in the Sdakhur province; the Prophets bless your new family.’

(Next door, Bashir sneezes again, and groans in frustration.)
